Off to home and missing the ICZM course already. Piece of our hearts are left in Warnemünde beaches forever!

Even though we had to get up early but the day was super interesting. We started with the lecture about landscape & settlement history in Northern Germany. After that we packed ourselves in a University bus and went to visit small cities with astonishing architecture. Stops were short but we all really liked peaceful surroundings. In a mid day we were already in Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg. And since the wery wirst moment there we had no doubt why it is called like this. City was enchanting, cathedral, city streets, castle and the atmosphere of city, everything. Now we have to deal with 1000 photos we tooked. Thanks Gerald and Johanna for all the information they had shared! was an amazing day:)

The modelling lectures were very interesting. It's great to hear about something that is so close to my heart. Mathematics is the mother of all sciences, and this was proved by Jovita and René. :) It was very exciting to hear about modelling of water quality and transport. The lectures were thought-provoking and inspiring, I took a lot of notes and already started to reconsider my master thesis. Modelling of real life systems is worth attention.

We agree with colegues, yesterday the lecture of Marine litter and the exercise in the beach was really interesting. We enjoyed the sun and didn't really cared if our hands become dirty picking up the litter on the beach. Even when Tadas knee started to hur much more, his tanned face never stopped smiling :) Now he promised to never fall down the stairs again :) And today after the modelling lecture we realised that this information will be more usefull in the future, when we become smarter :)

The day at the beach - or 463 cigarette ends collected.

The lecture on marine litter by Gerald, was interesting, innovative and relevant. After the lecture we went to the beach... Where we had a chance to feel it with our own skin, how ecologists make their living. We sieved sand, looked for plastic, and scoured the beach for all the litter we could find. Probably it wont be a surprise if oceanologists didnt love it as much as a chance to play with a secchi disk yesterday, but in the end it was fun - not sure or because of cleaning the beach, which is nice or because of the tan we got now :))

Yesterday we had an aquaculture day! It was good weather yet again, so going out on the field trip and visiting various places of fish industry was much appreciated :)
Lecture on Aquaponics systems at the University of Rostock was something from the future. Biggest impression was that they are going to use the system so effectively - even worms are going to jump to the fish tank by themselves :)
We want to thank Harry W. Palm and Nardine Stybel for taking us there!!

Just sitting and remembering the BaltCoast kick off meetings and presentations. I learned a lot about SAF and the need of cooperation with other specialists. I will apply the knowledge of issue identification working on my master thesis and surely will find a way of application of it elsewhere. There's definitely an improvement in the making of my decisions. I believe that all the courses, that we will have the opportunity to attend, will be as professional and interesting as this conference. And of course still can't forget about the dancing we did. Never thought that I would enjoy anything like Lindy Hop or Swing. I have never danced like this before so it was a wonderful new experience. Frankly I can say that I became rather good at it and just have to say thank you for the organizers of this wonderful time.

Today we have had a lecture on Marine Spatial planning and ecosystem services. After the lecture we had a chance to do practical excercise, wich had forced as to take a walk around the Warnemunde. Despite the sleepy moods that we had, the sunshine in the clear sky did put a smile on our faces. The city- shined in different colours. At last we saw the city for the resort that it is. During the ecosystem services it seemed a little bit difficult. But latter on it was fun to hear that our friends had to say on their topics. In the end it was a wonderfull day :)

Yesterday we had an Excursion to the Szczecin (Oder) Lagoon!! Stop at the resort of Heringsdorf really set us in the mood for summer :) We could not help but wonder how well would a similar bridge look in Palanga, Lithuania. It would be great to have a restaurant at the end of Palanga bridge.
And thank you BaltCoast for choosing the perfect weather for the boat trip. We had so much fun that the time flew away and we look forward to the ICZM course to start so we can ask all the questions we didn't ask yet

The SAF was and still is something completely new to me, as I have never heard something of the same way to give a solution to an environmental (not necessarily) problem a social solution. But as you think around, you realize that ironically it is to science problem solving something that a democracy is to politics. It is a might not be a good way to solve the problems that arise, but it is the best way there is right now. However, enough about the SAF, I personally had a chance to join an Estonian team for a few brief moments just to realize that whole group work was a way to show us what works and what doesn't, what in fundamental way is a great educational choise. Despite the educational excitement, there is a dance party waiting for us .. and who is not keen to dance ? - See you there guys!

After a long trip to Germany, we met with people from IOW and from that point we knew, that our time in Warnemunde will be fun and interesting. I'm glad that at the Get together party we had the opportunity to meet and chat with scientist from different countries. Kick-off meeting and all the presentations were especially informative, we get to know about BONUS program, SPICOSA and BaltCoast project. We also had an opportunity to participate in the different group meetings of Case Study Sites, discus about their main problems and probable solutions. I hope other days will be as interesting as these two!

The first days of the kick-off meeting are very beneficial to my thesis in particular as I have an opportunity to observe and in some part participate in the process of the further development of SAF.
It is also a great opportunity to meet scientists behind the SAF and get their insights.

I never thought that a science conference can be so cosy. I really enjoyed meeting the international community in such an event.

The welcome party of the kick-off meeting was something out of the bounds of lovely!! Me, and my peers enjoyed it profoundly!
PS. There is nothing better than dry riesling :))
