Coastal Management II - International Student Course 2016

The international student course for Lithuanian students from Klaipėda University, taking place in Germany at the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research in Warnemünde (IOW), went into its second round this April!

Between April 17th and April 29th, the IOW was glad to welcome 14 Lithuanian PhD-, Master and Bachelor students who took the chance to take part in the practical course "Coastal Management II" - among them some of the students who already attended last year's student courses.

Main concern of the lectures was the application of a Systems Approach Framework (SAF) by addressing a variety of topics concerning Coastal Management, such as bathing water quality, coastal tourism, coastal protection management, ecosystem services, coastal & marine spatial planning, fisheries & aquaculture, hydrological modelling and climate chance adaptions in the Baltic Sea region. Topics were orientated on local case study examples and during several excursions, field and laboratory work, student presentations and group discussions, the students practical knowledge and skills were strengthened.

During the students' stay in Warnemünde, the 34th Annual Conference ‘Geography of Seas and Coasts’ (AMK) took place at the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research, which gave the possibility for additional insight into the international concern of Coastal Management.

Social activities with a swing dance course as a highlight added up to this fruitful meeting of lecturers and young scientists.
