BONUS BaltCoast Summer School 2016

This summer from August 22-28, the first BaltCoast summer school under the title "A System Approach Framework for Coastal Research and Management: From theory to practice" took place in Klaipeda, Lithuania! The summer school addressed bachelor and master students, young post-graduates up to young PhD students.

Within one week of intense training, a group of 25 participants from Germany, Latvia, Spain, Poland, Italy, Lithuania and also Marocco gained insight into the System Approach Framework application for Coastal Research and Management. The SAF is a methodology that has been designed, developed and tested by various institutes and universities across the European Union where multidisciplinary teams were involved in the analysis of coastal problems, engaging in inter- and transdisciplinary work with society and policy, tackling environmental problems in the coastal zone, aiming to improve the ecological sustainability, economic efficiency, and social equity.

During the course all five SAF steps (Issue Identification, System DesignSystem Formulation, System Appraisal, System Output) were addressed both theoretically and during exercises or group work. Other aspects as understanding the system using an ecosystem service approach and evaluating the management success by a coastal indicator system were addressed and applied by the participants themselves.
